Sisan Lee(b.1995) explores how materials found in the surrounding environment can be expanded within new contexts. He collects a range of materials, including stone, wood, marble, and metal, and takes the inherent qualities of each material, as well as the traces left by their processes of formation, as the starting point of his work. Through sculptural methods such as casting, rearranging, enlarging, and combining, he preserves the characteristics of the materials while creating new relationships and functions. This investigation extends into sculpture, furniture, and installation.

‹Neo-Primitive› series is created using apple tree branches collected after seasonal pruning in the orchard once tended by the artist’s grandmother. Using sand molds, the artist casts these branches in aluminum, transferring the natural forms as they are.

While the shape of the wood is preserved, it is translated into aluminum, an industrial material. Through this process, the work exists in a state that is neither wood nor metal, revealing an ambiguous material relationship between nature and the artificial, primitivity and modernity.

The structure derived from natural forms meets the permanence of metal, preserving traces of the artist’s memories of his hometown and grandmother in an enduring form. At the same time, the work functions as a medium that connects past and present, where memory and material converge across different moments in time.
